You may be wondering about marijuana (also called cannabis, pot, weed and various colorful monikers) now that it is legal for recreational use in the state of California. We want to make sure our visitors understand the new rules when they visit San Francisco. Observe the following rules and regulations: You must be at least 21 years old to buy, use or use cannabis. This includes smoking, vaping and eating products containing cannabis. You can have 28.5 grams of cannabis plant material (about one ounce) and 8 grams of cannabis concentrate. Retail sale of cannabis to minors is illegal. Driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal. Consuming, smoking, eating or vaping cannabis in public is illegal. It is illegal to open a package containing cannabis or cannabis products in a public place. This includes, for example, parks and sidewalks, as well as commercial and residential areas. It is also illegal to consume cannabis in other places where smoking is prohibited, including bars, restaurants, buildings open to the public, workplaces and places within 15 meters of doors and ventilation openings. Although legal under California law, you cannot consume or possess cannabis on federal lands such as national parks, even if the park is located in California. Federal lands in the Bay of San Francisco include the Presidio, Alcatraz Island, Marin Headlands, and Ocean Beach. Cannabis may be consumed on private property, but property owners and landlords may prohibit the use and possession of cannabis on their property. It is illegal to transport cannabis across state lines, even if you are traveling to another state where cannabis is legal. Only establishments that have obtained a state license can engage in the retail sale of cannabis products. Local Cannabis Businesses Since the recreational legalization of cannabis culture in San Francisco, it has exploded into many products and experiences. The quality and diversity of the offer, the luxury of experience and the knowledge of local “peddlers” distinguish our cannabis community from others. You can see it all for yourself during the annual Evergreen San Francisco event.
